EGR 102 Introduction to Engineering Through Applied Science II Prof. Marc H. Richman, Sc.D., P.E.

Educational/Professional Background BS - Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sc.D. –Massachusetts Institute of Technology Registered Professional Engineer - Mass, RI, and CT

Professional Background Dr. Richman is a Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Brown University where he taught for 36 years. Dr. Richman is President of Marc H. Richman, Inc., Consulting & Forensic Engineers.

Areas of Professional Interest Forensic Engineering –Expert witness in civil and criminal cases ranging from fender benders, slip and falls, to gas explosions, bridge collapses, aircraft crashes. Consulting Engineering –Metallurgy and Materials Engineering –Structural Engineering –Failure Analysis

Areas of Interest -- Teaching Freshman Engineering (Impulse) Courses –Egr 101, Egr 102 Mechanics –Egr 241 Statics –Egr 242 Dynamics Mechanics of Materials –CEN 202, MNE 252

Egr 102 an Impulse Course This course is designed to provide an introduction to engineering and get you involved right away in –Attacking engineering problems –Working as a member of a four person team –Learning written and oral communication skills –Using computers –Doing laboratory and classroom exercises –Completing a capstone design project

All of this using mechanics – statics & dynamics Tying together Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, as well as Mechanical and Civil Engineering in this course.

How the course works Egr 102 is comprised of several components: –Classroom lectures –Classroom exercises –Classroom design projects –Engineering Ethics –Homework –Exams –Capstone design project w/oral and written report

Attendance Attendance is MANDATORY!!! You are expected to be in class on time and stay until the class is over! If you cannot attend class you should notify Prof. Richman and the TA ahead of time (if possible) and have a good excuse! –Sickness, family emergencies, religious holidays, etc. are valid excuses.

You will not be allowed to post to any Wicki page except the Comments and Discussion page. –On that page you are free to post questions or comments, for example The Prof is going too fast I already know this stuff Please write more clearly and in larger script on the whiteboard Why do I have to work in a team?

Why can’t I eat in the classroom? The TA is cool The Prof is ancient How do I get an A grade? –Other students, the TA, and the Prof can post replies to your comments on this page. –Hopefully, this will allow improvements in the conduct of the course as we go along in the semester.

Teams Teams of four students each will be formed. You will be in the same team in your other freshman courses. You will work as a team when so required. You will not be allowed to switch out of or into a team. This is like real life – when you start at a job and are assigned to a team – that’s it!

Computers There are two PCs per four person team in the impulse labs. You may bring in and use your own computer along with the team PCs. In a week or so you will be given an id and password to allow you to utilize the servers in ECE or MNE.

Group Activity #1 Introduce yourself and learn each others –Name –Home town –Major Each group will come forward and one of you will introduce the other 3 group members, providing the 3 pieces of information.

In-Class Activity #1 This is two part team effort. 1. Why is there a flooding problem along the lower Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans? 2. How would your team solve that problem?
