What would it mean to say two people share a culture? They share… Customs Beliefs Ideas/values Traditions Social habits Arts Religion

How Culture Influences Housing Culture is a combination of all the customs, beliefs, and ideas of a group of people. It includes their values, traditions, and social habits.

How does culture affect housing? Influences types of homes built Individual style of homes Arrangement of rooms Furnishings

Different Kinds of Households A household is made up of all people who live together in one housing unit.

Types of Households NUCLEAR family- father, mother, and one or more children. EXTENDED family- other relatives in addition to parents and children. SINGLE-PARENT family- one parent living with one or more children.

What is a blended family? It is comprised of a husband and wife, one or both of whom are in a second marriage or later marriage, plus their children and step-children. What ways would visitation of children with non-custodial parent may impact the issue of housing?

Why are extended households growing more common in North America? Increase in population of cultural groups that value “family” Aging parents needing assistance from grown children Adult children returning to parent’s home for financial reasons

Housing and Status A person’s job, income, dress and social position are main factors that influence status. In the home… Size Location Design Furnishings Type/number of rooms Amount of land

Building Materials In India there are two types of houses: Pucca (superior) Made of birch or stone held together with mortar and they have wood Kacha (inferior) Made of brick or stone held together with mud and they have straw-covered roofs.

Types and Numbers of Rooms In India… In lower class houses, cooking is usually done in the central living room and there is rarely a bathroom with plumbing.

The Amount of Land Surrounding In England, many people live in a series of identical houses situated side by side and joined by common walls. These structures, called terrace houses, were originally built for factory workers.

Family Structures and Roles In most nuclear families, both husband and wife have full-time jobs outside of the home. Children often help with household duties

Fashion and Personal Taste Fads and fashions affect housing design, just as they influence clothing styles. Certain colors and themes are popular for a few years and then change the styles change.
