About the ABS  The Australian Bureau of Statistics assists and encourages informed decision-making, research and discussion within governments and the community, by providing a high quality, objective and responsive national statistical service.  Provides a wide range of economic, social and environmental statistics.  Provides statistics at national, state and sub-state levels.  Facilitates the sharing of non-ABS data.

 Census night is Tuesday 8th August  Census 2006 Unpaid Work Volunteering Disability (Need for Assistance)  1st stage census data available in July/Aug  2nd (and final) stage census data available at the end of Final release date to be determined. Key Dates for Census Operations

 Up to 300 Area supervisors will be employed in WA. ƒ They will manage a workforce of between 5 & 9 collectors & ensure an accurate count of their area. ƒThese positions will be advertised from 11 Feb  Approx 3000 Census collectors will also be employed throughout WA. ƒ They will deliver & collect census forms from every household in their workload area. ƒThese positions will be advertised from 8th April Opportunities for working on the census

 Population growth of approx 1.5% p.a. since 2001 (2nd only to Qld) this equates to an additional 140,000 people since  Indigenous population as a proportion of total population increased from 3.0 to 3.5%.  Increased focus from the ABS on householders lodging census forms over the internet.  Greater focus on using census "Ambassadors" to assist with promotion and awareness raising activities.  2006 Census profiles will be based primarily on usual residence as opposed to place of enumeration data.
