1 MicroPot Prototype Work in Progress Jaak Lippmaa Helsinki Group, Helsinki Institute of Physics, University of Helsinki CERN, February, 2006

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa2 Manchester Criteria Detectors are in secondary vacuum Access to detectors and/or positioning mechanics without interrupting LHC Minimum number of degrees of freedom (should reduce mechanical jamming risk) At least 5 micron positioning accuracy Bake without detectors installed Transfer cryostat Modification 3 (Sebastien’s prposal)

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa3 Mechanical Considerations Very limited space available around beam pipes Accurate distances not known Virtually no room outside the transfer cryostat Mechanical support structure not clear Primary vacuum cannot be broken once the pot is installed

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa4 Manchester Proposal – Tilted Pot Beam Pipe Proton Beam Detector Primary Vacuum Secondary Vacuum Tilt 13º Bellows Stepper Motor Outer Weld Points Flange Feedthroughs Emergency Stops Detector movement Rest Stops CWT (optional)

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa5 Roadmap to Successful Prototype Design criteria – maximum use of COTS components Prototype basic design ready in March Components ordered in April/May Prototype building in June Beamtest at FNAL in July/August Plans for Prototype II

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa6 We we are at the moment Several alternative designs were considered (vertical, horizontal, tilted...) Rigidity is a major concern Smoothness of movement is a concern Possible damage to positioning mechanism during emergency stops Vacuum force compensation Cooling of detectors needs to be decided There is at least 30 mm (z-axis) for detectors We need the detector module weight to calculate cantilever loads to the slider We need urgently the number of leads for feedthroughs

CERN 15 February 2006MicroPot Prototype Jaak Lippmaa7 Status Detectors in secondary vacuum, slider in air, primary vacuum shielded prototype Manufacturers of COTS components have been identified Negotiations for pricing and detailed specs have started Design is being reviewed for overall mechanical stability and rigidity COTS component compatibility review is about to start Component list does not rule out alternative designs Co-operation with UTA confirmed
