Helen Keller By: Ally Frymier

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882 she became ill with was what we know now as scarlet fever. The illness left her deaf and blind. In 1887 Helen's teacher, Anne Sullivan began teaching her how to communicate with other people.

" Her unprecedented accomplishments in overcoming her disabilities made her a celebrity at an early age; at twelve she published an autobiographical sketch in the Youth’s Companion, and during her junior year at Radcliffe she produced her first book, The Story of My Life, still in print in over fifty languages. Helen Keller published four other books of her personal experiences as well as a volume on religion, one on contemporary social problems, and a biography of Anne Sullivan. She also wrote many articles for national magazines on the prevention of blindness and the education and special problems for the blind. "

Helen Keller was, for a time, the most famous handicapped person in the world.

In 1900 Helen Keller entered Radcliffe college. With help from her teacher Anne Sullivan she graduated in 1904.

Helen Keller died June 1, 1968 at the age of 87 in Westport, Connecticut of natural causes.

" We are never really happy until we try to brighten the lives of others." -Helen Keller " Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." -Helen Keller "Never bend your head, Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye." -Helen Keller "Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light." -Helen Keller "There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." -Helen Keller Quotes

Helen Keller never learned what today we know as American Sign Language. She simply finger-spelled letters, words, and phrases into the person's hands that she was communicating with. She did learn to speak, although she was not very easy to understand if you were not use to hearing her. Fun Facts Although Helen Keller was engaged to be married at one time, she did not follow through with the marriage. * *
