MAVENIPSR3 - SWEA – March 1, SWEA Particles and Fields Package Pre-Ship Review March 1, 2013 Project-Level Assessment Jim Morrissey, MAVEN ISM Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission

MAVENIPSR3 - SWEA – March 1, Introduction Particles Fields Package is 6 of 8 of the MAVEN instruments –STATIC, SWIA, SEP (SSL) –SWEA (SSL, IRAP) –LPW/EUV (LASP) –MAG (GSFC) All instrument interface electrically with the spacecraft through the PFDPU (SSL) SWEA is the final instrument in the PFP to be delivered. SSL has overcome issues with high voltage discharges which caused the delivery date to move from late November.

MAVENIPSR3 - SWEA – March 1, SWEA Status All RFAs are closed SWEA has completed environmental testing and is finishing calibration SWEA delivery was delayed from November to March 4th due to issues with high voltage discharges. –SWEA was disassembled and re-worked with the help of high voltage experts, Steve Battel and Art Ruitberg. –After re-work SWEA went through vibration and TVAC testing without any reoccurrence of high voltage discharges Prior to and during TVAC testing, three instances of a voltage instability were observed –Since the end of TVAC the instrument has operated at high voltage for over 60 hours without reoccurrence –We have decided to delay delivery to March 7th to allow for additional monitoring on a 24-hour basis –March 7 th will allow SWEA to be integrated on the spacecraft for one of three axes of vibration testing.

MAVENIPSR3 - SWEA – March 1, Risks Associated with Late Delivery of SWEA to ATLO TimingRiskImpact to NGIMSImpact to S/CMitigation 12/12/2012 SWEA will miss transition and science SVTs Communications (Cmd/Tlm) issues. Loss of mission schedule for corrective actions. Regression testing for science/deep dip will be performed after SWEA is installed. Transition and science SVTs will be run again 06/12/2013 to 06/14/ /09/2013 SWEA will miss magnetic swing test NonePotential to interfere with magnetometer (MAG) DC measurements during science SWEA will be tested for magnetic cleanliness at SSL prior to delivery and compensated if necessary. Results be entered into the S/C magnetics model. 01/25/2013 SWEA will miss modal survey NonePotential for inaccuracies in model frequency measurements LM has an SWEA mass model currently installed on the SWEA boom. 02/05/2013 SWEA will miss acoustics testing SWEA fails during launchNoneInstrument design is not vulnerable to acoustic loads. 02/12/2013 SWEA will miss pyro-shock testing SWEA fails during pyro- shock events NoneSWEA-boom interface will be instrumented during pyro-shock. SWEA test plan will be reviewed to determine if additional shock testing is required. 02/19/2013 SWEA will miss sine vibe testing SWEA fails during launchNonePerforming full instrument-level vibration testing in accordance with the MAVEN ERD prior to delivery. 03/27/2013 SWEA may miss APP deployment testing SWEA fails due to APP shock NoneSWEA-boom interface will be instrumented during APP deploy. A second APP deployment test will be performed at the launch site. 04/01/2013 Late electrical interface verification Electrical interface and/or communication issues. Loss of mission schedule for corrective actions. STL IF testing has been completed that provides confidence in the SWEA electrical interface. Instrument and spacecraft is electrically protected against damage from each other. 04/19/2013 SWEA may miss EMI/EMC and magnetics testing S/C or other payloads interfere with SWEA SWEA interferes with S/C or other payloads Full instrument-level EMI/EMC testing will be performed in accordance with the MAVEN ERD. SWEA will be tested for magnetic cleanliness at SSL prior to delivery and compensated if necessary. Worst case SWEA can be disabled on orbit if interference is significant. 04/29/2013 SWEA may miss jitter testing Jitter at the SWEA instrument will be unknown NoneSWEA sensitivity is based on absolute pointing and is insensitive to jitter. 05/15/2013 SWEA may miss T/V testingSWEA fails during flightNoneFull instrument-level TVAC testing and thermal balance will be performed in accordance with the MAVEN ERD.

MAVENIPSR3 - SWEA – March 1, Post-Delivery Planning Arrive at Denver at 1:00 PM on March 7th Deliver to the LM Manufacturing Test Facility (MTF) for bench checkout (2 hours) AIRR 8:00 AM on March 8th Mechanical installation followed by safe-to-mate and self-test on March 8th Spacecraft returns to vibration testing
