Write down three observations about the victims The victims were Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. A

Witness Statement “A man called Cabrinovic took the bomb from his coat pocket, struck the bomb’s percussion cap against a lamp post, took aim and threw the bomb at them… The bomb glanced off Ferdinand’s arm, bounced off the folded car top and into the street behind them. The car sped off” Account from a passer by. B

C The Murder Weapon

A confession “I drew the revolver and raised it against the automobile without aiming. I even turned my head as I shot. I let go two shots one after the other, but I am not certain whether I shot twice or more often, because I was so excited” Gavrilo Princip D

Focus on the region: F October 1908 Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia was made up of many different cultures. One of these cultures was the ethnic Serbs.

The Black Hand The Black Hand were a terrorist organisation based in Serbia. The Black Hand wanted to form a greater Serbia where all Serbs could live. Gavrilo Princip was a member. He and some others planned the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.

Statement by Austria-Hungary The bloody deed was not the work of a single individual but a well organized plot... there can be no doubt that its policy of uniting all Southern Slavs under the Serbian flag encourages such crimes and the continuation of this situation is a chronic peril for my House and my territories. My efforts must be directed to isolating Serbia and reducing her size. Franz Josef (Austria-Hungary’s Emperor) G Franz Josef blamed the assassination on Serbia. 1)Does the evidence support this? 2)Why would he be so keen to blame Serbia?

Key Questions 1)Who were the victims? 2)Who was the murderer? 3)Did he act alone? 4)What weapon was used to murder the victims? 5)What is strange about Princip’s account of his actions? 6)Why was there tension in this region? 7)What motive would Princip have for killing Franz Ferdinand? 8)Who should be blamed? 9)What action should be taken?
