Current Network Configuration

Current Bandwidth 179 sites have either 56K or 64K 77 sites have T-1s 81 sites have either 128K or 256K

Since the Gates computers were installed, 95 libraries have been upgraded.

Since Gates…. 109 new or renovated libraries 1316 new computers added to the network

In the Next 6 Years… 72 new or renovated facilities planned ????? New computers

Current Network Problems Upgrades are expensive, often excessive – no middle ground State Library funding is limited Current configuration has limited ability to grow Increased demand as result of added facilities /computers Limited capacity for future increases in service delivery

What Do We Need to Do?

We Need To: Protect the quality of access Sustain the network Build for growth

Protect The Quality of Access Deploy greater bandwidth to accommodate present use Enable reserve bandwidth for future services

Sustain the network Spread the cost of connectivity Enable local control over branch bandwidth for higher efficiency

Build For Growth Install pipelines large enough to meet future demands of new computers, new libraries and new services.

Proposed Network Configuration

Bandwidth At Each Hub 9 Hub sites with subrate DS3s to LaNET 7 hubs with 9MB Internet access 2 hubs with 12 MB Internet access (EBR and Shreve)

Spreading the Cost Of Connectivity State Library pays for connections to each hub, including initial equipment (Level 1) State Library pays for connections to each library system headquarters (Level 2) Each library system pays for connections to its branches (Level 3, beginning 7/1/2005) – 16 libraries have no branches – State aid can be used to pay for connectivity – State Library will assist libraries in applying for E-rate.

What is The Role of the Hub Library? House and maintain router Contact LaNET / BellSouth if there are network problems.

What is The Role of the Local Library? Upgrade branches when necessary House and maintain router Absorb cost of branch telecommunications Apply for E-rate

What is The Role of the State Library? Provide overall project management Pay for Levels 1,2,3 through June 2005 Assist libraries with E-rate paperwork Buy, install and pay for maintenance on Level 1 & 2 routers. Pay for Levels 1 & 2 beginning July 2005

Timeline August 5 -- Meeting with hub directors and technical people August – Hold meeting at each hub for libraries connected to it. September/October – Order lines from BellSouth October– until whenever? -- Installation by BellSouth October/November – State Library assists with E- rate paperwork
