Presentation transcript:

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 SGIPDL The International Bureau, at the request of MIA, has begun exploratory work to create an IPDL search aid tool. We have called this the Search Guidance IPDL (SGIPDL).

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 The aim of the SGIPDL is to provide information to help a patent searcher to determine which journals / periodicals / databases to search for particular subject matter or classes (IPC).

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 How do your examiners currently determine which periodicals (Non Patent Literature) of the PCT Minimum Documentation to search? The Search Guidance Intellectual Property Digital Library (SGIPDL) aims to provide signposts and search aid to help examiners to arrive at search destinations.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 The SGIPDL is not expected to allow you to perform a search, but to give information about and links to the journals / databases / search engines. The SGIPDL is to be established on WIPO’s website. The next step is to consolidate the requirements of an SGIPDL.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 To establish a new SGIPDL database the International Bureau needs your input. Your experience and ideas are sought at this critical development phase. We need your help to create the right tool the first time around.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 This presentation is therefore intended to provoke thought and invite discussion about possible ways to achieve that aim.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 For this presentation we have modelled our demonstration SGIPDL on the “TK Links tool” which we developed for the PCT Minimum Documentation TK periodicals selection exercise.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 You will recall that in the existing TKLinks model, a series of hyperlinks and Tips is provided.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 Pressing the "Tips" button to the right of the hyperlink provides additional information about the specific periodical and help to navigate the site.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 In TKLinks, the information sources are organised alphabetically and Navigation is via an alphabetical ‘jump bar’.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 For the SGIPDL however, we think that a more structured and complete model may be required... to provide better targeted results lists, 2. more and better structured TIPS information, 3. better facility to take your results to the next step - Searching

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 We could retain the current TIPS feature but organise the information sources by IPC, e.g.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 But to find information sources relevant to the Examiner’s needs we would propose instead a “free-text” search of the ‘SGIPDL’ database...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 … and / or one or more selections from predefined drop down boxes….

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 These should provide a more targeted list of sources to search...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, a list that would be useful for the searcher to refine (by adding and deleting items)...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 …from one or more results lists into a ‘master results list’...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 … in much the same way as you would add to and subtract from an internet shopping basket.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 Such a list could then be printed, or exported to Excel or another format, for your search file.

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 We also believe that better information, would help choose items to go on the “master results list”...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 E.g a format based loosely on the six selection criteria …..

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 ….locatability and identification….

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, coverage...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, access, and...

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 groupings - what other resources can be searched at the same time?

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 The provision of an SGIPDL database to support such a model will require input from your offices. It is therefore important that you are involved in determining what features are provided. We are looking for Volunteers. Please contact us on

WIPO/TDS/MB, Geneva, September 13, 2004 For more information please click the “Minimum Documentation” on the left hand menu bar of the closed MIA forum web-site. Thank you for your interest.
