DBQ = Document - Based Question A mix of textual and visual primary sourcesA mix of textual and visual primary sources Typically 7 documentsTypically 7 documents –Newspaper articles, letters, diaries, speeches, excerpts from legislation, political cartoons, charts, graphs, etc. Some/a few may be “classics” that you may have previously seenSome/a few may be “classics” that you may have previously seen –Others will be new to you No DBQ will focus on Period 1 (prior to 1607) and Period 9 (after 1980)

DBQ Getting Started 1. Clearly Read the Question (many will have multiple parts) 2. Organize Your Essay (Grids/Charts) 3. Gather OI (Outside Information Before and After) 4. Read the Documents –Order they appear –Notice connections –Watch for inconsistencies –Identify the sources of the docs (next slide)(next slide) –Look for evidence that could refute your argument Try to put this into your essay – Don’t just discard itTry to put this into your essay – Don’t just discard it

Author-Point of View WHO produced the document and HOW that might have impacted what they wrote? Setting/Historical Context WHEN was the document produced? Periodization Audience INTENDED audience? Purpose WHY was the document created/written at this time? (Historical Causation & Argumentation) Remember, docs. can be used in a variety of ways! Questions to Ask Yourself About the Documents

End of some trend/movement/idea, etc. Beginning of some trend/movement/idea Do NOT end on the note that this is the reason we are where we are today! The Concluding” Paragraph
