Italics Underlining

Italics or Underlining  Italics is a printer’s term for a style of type which is slightly slanted.  In this sentence the word happiness is typed in italics.  In handwritten or typed material, each word or letter which should be in italics is underlined.

Italics or Underlining  1. In Titles:  Underline the titles of books, plays, book-length poems, magazines, radio and TV programs, movies, albums, pamphlets, manuals, names of ships and aircraft, and newspapers.  Examples:  The Lord of the Rings  People  U.S.S. Arizona  Dr. Oz

Italics or Underlining  Note: Do not underline or use quotation marks on your own title at the top of your page.

Italics or Underlining  2. Foreign Words  Underline foreign words which are not commonly used in everyday English. Also underline scientific names.  Examples:  E pluribus unum appears on most U.S. currency.  Humankind is also known as Homo sapiens.
