Parts of Speech Parts of Speech. The parts of speech are: verb noun adjective adverb preposition pronoun interjection and conjunction.

Adjective Adjective. A word that describes. An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun. Example: Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. (Moby Dick by Herman Melville)

Adverb Adverb. A word that describes a verb, explaining where, when, how, or to what extent. An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Conjunction Conjunction. A word that connects words or groups of words. Examples: and, or, nor, but, yet, for, so. Pronoun Pronoun. A word that takes the place of one or more nouns. Example: Do all men kill the things they do not love? (The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare). Personal pronoun.
