COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN SPAIN

CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change is a worldwide problem and it’s the cause of most environmental problems in Spain. Since 1973, the average temperature of Spain has been increasing faster and faster.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO CLIMATE CHANGE The consequences of Climate Change in Spain are: Temperature Rise Desertification Decrease of cultivable land. Lack of water, as it evaporates faster. Increase of some diseases which are transmitted by the air.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO TEMPERATURE RISE In this map, we can see that the temperature has risen faster in the Mediterranean coast. VERY HIGH RISE OF TEMPERATURE HIGH RISE OF TEMPERATURE. NORMAL RISE OF TEMPERATURE

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO DESERTIFICATION Spain is a very warm country so climate change and lack of water have had a huge effect on the desertification process. It threats a third of Spain’s area. Desertification is the main cause of fires in Spain, which destroys plants and trees every year.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO DESERTIFICATION The North and the mountain areas are wet but the rest of Spain is really dry, that’s why temperatures are so high and desertification is an important problem. VERY DRY DRY AVERAGE WET

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO POLLUTION Traffic and factories are the main sources of pollution. 80% of Spain’s urban Pollution is caused by traffic.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO POLLUTION The consequences of pollution in Spain are: Acid Rain Environmental degradation Danger to many animal species Death of vegetation. Reduction of the flora and fauna.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO ACID RAIN Pollution Causes Acid Rain. When a lot of dangerous gases are poured into the atmosphere, the rain becomes acid. It can damage forests, buildings, etc.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO URBANIZATION OF NATURAL AREAS Many areas, mainly very near the sea, are being urbanized to increase tourism. That is destroying many coastal landscapes.

COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN MURCIA MURCIA Our region

Drought MAIN PROBLEMS COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO Deforestation and desertification Pollution

DEFORESTATION AND DESERTIFICATION Its warm and dry climate, the lack of water, the industrial and economic growing and tourism are the causes of these problems. Every year forests disappear in Murcia because of the lack of water. Many trees are cut to build houses, factories and resorts. New economic activities are causing the end of rural works, which took care of forest some years ago. This lack of care produce the growing of the number of fires. COMENIUS PROJECT “YOU AND ME MAKE EUROPE” I.E.S. BOHÍO

POLLUTION Pollution of the sea and seaboard: This was a consequence of the mining and petrol industry. Atmospheric pollution: Now a days this is in a normal range but 20 years ago Cartagena, our city, was one of the most polluted cities in Spain together with Bilbao because of petrol industry.
