Office of the Vice President for Research Infrastructure Survey Highlights: Nearly half of all research infrastructure areas serve users from 5 or more colleges. Research infrastructure users are most commonly affiliated with the College of Biological Sciences, the Academic Health Center, and the College of Science & Engineering. 95% of research infrastructure areas report they are meeting the basic needs of their users. Only 53% of research infrastructure areas are ESOs or ISOs. Only 23% report that external sales are a primary source of funding. 74% feel the needs they serve could not be met at the same level of quality by third-party solutions if their services were made unavailable.

Office of the Vice President for Research Most research infrastructure support users from more than one college. Below are the colleges or academic units with which users might affiliate and what percent of research infrastructure areas reported having users affiliated with that college. For example, 69% of research infrastructure units responding to the survey said one or more users affiliated with the College of Biological Sciences. Office of the Vice President for Research The major financial concerns research infrastructure faces are how to respond to increasing demands for services and changing technological demands, brought on by disciplinary advances. Financial Concerns

Office of the Vice President for Research 65% of research infrastructure areas have 5 or fewer employees; 14.8% require less than one full-time position. Only 3.7% infrastructure areas require more than 50 workers. Employment situations are relatively stable: only 50% of research infrastructure areas reported any new hires in FY11 and 48% of those were for new positions. 87% of infrastructure managers estimate the average length of employment is three or more years; 61% estimate the average length is six or more years.
