Research infrastructure users are most commonly affiliated with the College of Biological Sciences, the Academic Health Center, and the College of Science & Engineering. 95% of research infrastructure areas report they are meeting the basic needs of their users. Only 53% of research infrastructure areas are ESOs or ISOs. Only 23% report that external sales are a primary source of funding. 74% feel the needs they serve could not be met at the same level of quality by third-party solutions if their services were made unavailable.

Only 3.7% infrastructure areas require more than 50 workers. Employment situations are relatively stable: only 50% of research infrastructure areas reported any new hires in FY11 and 48% of those were for new positions. 87% of infrastructure managers estimate the average length of employment is three or more years; 61% estimate the average length is six or more years.
