English III – Cody / Caldwell Rough Draft Instruction

What do I write for the first sentence of the introduction paragraph? Your introduction paragraph is very important. It is like the cover of a book. Let’s make your audience want to read it because the first sentence catches their attention like you would want to catch the attention of someone you liked. Remember when you go for a job interview, you dress to impress.

3 ways to format the first sentence of the introduction paragraph… Startling fact about your career that grabs the reader’s attention. Example: “Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and secondary teachers, held about 3.5 million jobs in 2008 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). *U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics – author of information

2. Definition – give a definition of of your career to grab the reader’s attention. Example: “Teachers play an important role in fostering the intellectual and social development of children during their formative years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

3. Combine startling fact about your career with definition of your career to grab the reader’s attention. Example: “The modern teacher wears many hats, Including educator, coach, activity sponsor Nurse, and career advisor. There are over Three million teachers in the United States (Kelly). Kelly = the author’s last name

What do I put in the next four sentences of the introduction paragraph? The next four sentences are a bridge between the first sentence and your thesis statement. The bridge gives more information about your career that will be explained later in the paper. Some of the sentences can be in your own words and some can be from quotes you found in your research that will not be used in other areas of your paper.

What do I write for my thesis sentence? Thesis sentence = skeleton sentence that tells the reader about the topic of your paper.
