Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space

Properties of Matter Physical – can be observed or measured without changing the composition Chemical – the ability of a substance to undergo chemical change – to form new substances

Examples of Physical Properties: -Color -Mass -Volume -Density -Melting Point -Boiling Point -Odor

Examples of Chemical Properties: -Flammability -Oxidation -Reacts with Acids -Reacts with Bases -Reacts with Water -Toxicity

Changes in Matter Physical – no new substance is formed Chemical – one or more new substances are formed

Indicators of Chemical Change Precipitate - Solid forms. Gas Formation - Gas/bubbles form Color Change - Color changes Energy Change - Creates heat or light Odor Changes - Smell becomes different (Don't forget to waft.) Alone these don’t always indicate a chemical change has occurred the true test is have new substances formed

How Many States of Matter?

There are 4!! Solid – has a definite shape and a definite volume

Liquid : has a definite volume but no definite shape

Gas: has no definite shape or volume and is easily compressible
