Apparent Motions of the Sun Do Now: Look at this picture of the Rising Sun. What direction is the camera pointing?

Rises. Sets. Midday. Useful for Rises? Sets? Midday? Useful for? Telling time and direction How does it tell time and direction?

Sun Dials: Indicate time by the movement of the sun across the sky according to the shadow it forms. Also used for direction.

What direction is the shadow in? Where is the sun? So what time is it?

It’s 12 noon, which way is this guy facing?

Does the sun actually “rise”? What is actually moving?

Our system of time is based on the apparent motion of the sun across the sky. The motion of any object across the sky is apparent because it is not moving as it appears to be.

Rotation vs. Revolution

Aim: What causes the Seasons?

During which time of year is the Angle of the sun highest in New York During which time of year is the Angle of the sun highest in New York? Hawaii? Any place in the Northern Hemisphere

You decided to plant a garden in your NY backyard, in which direction should the garden face to maximize sunlight?

Approximately how many hours of sun-light does the North pole receive on March 23rd? How about 42*South?

During which time of year is the Angle of the sun highest in New York During which time of year is the Angle of the sun highest in New York? Hawaii? Any place in the Northern Hemisphere? Why?

Remember! It’s all about the TILT

During which time of year is the duration of Insolation the Least in New York? Hawaii? Alaska?
