AIM: (2) What are adaptations? Objectives Define and give examples of adaptations Define and give examples of environments

AIM: What are adaptations? Vocabulary Adaptation Environment Biotic and Abiotic

AIM: What are adaptations? Question What does the term environment mean? Answer? Everything that surrounds a living thing!

Environments NON LIVING THINGS LIVING THINGS

Environments other animals plants bugs insects bacteria air water LIVING THINGS other animals plants bugs insects bacteria NON LIVING THINGS air water sunlight rocks soil Abiotic Biotic

What are some living things in this environment? Catfish, weeping willow, raccoon, fish, frog, insects

What are some non-living things in this environment? Sunlight, water, lake bottom, air, mountains, dead tree

Living things use non-living resources to thrive and prosper Examine this log, for all the different animals which call this home, or supper !

The earth worm attempts to return the nutrients back to the soil The woodpecker gets food The termite spends his life here ! My favorite, the snake, may live beneath it! The moss has a home, so does the fungus The spider builds his nest here

AIM: What are adaptations? Question What does the term adaptation mean? Answer? Trait of a living thing that helps it live in its environment

AIM: What are adaptations? Question What does the term trait mean? Answer? A characteristic of something

Remember: ... The ability to adapt is a fundamental property of life and determines whether an organism survives or become extinct

AIM: What are adaptations? On the next 13 slides Describe various traits of the organisms and what adaptations they have made to survive in their environment.

Notice the adaptations listed by each picture. How to they help the animal get food?

Human Adaptations Place your pencil on your desk. Now, pick it up with one hand. Was that difficult? Describe how you picked it up in your NB Now place your pencil on your desk. Without using any part of your thumb pick it up. Get it in the writing position. Now, describe in your NB if this was easier or more difficult. What other activities does having a thumb – make them more easier to accomplish? Can you button a shirt w/o your thumb. What would our civilization be like without this adaptation?

Question We looked at how living things adapt to their environment. But what separates MAN from other living things is our ability to adapt our environment TO us.

How are we adapting our environment to us?

How are we adapting our environment to fit us?

How are we adapting our environment?

envirornment to our need? Dont we all adapt our envirornment to our need?

All organisms adapt to their environment AIM: What are Adaptations? Review All organisms adapt to their environment An adaptation helps an organism survive in its environment. People often adapt their environment to meet their needs as opposed to adapting to their environment.
