21 years of teaching middle school and high school: George Washington Prep HS Charles Drew Magnet/Gifted Middle School st year at Stephen White I am firm believer of teachers being the FACILITATOR of learning through inquiry and investigations. Hands on learning! Happily Married 2 children, son 8 and daughter 6 2 dogs 2 hamster’s 1 fish 25 year south bay resident I aspire to create DIFFERENT LEARNING EXPERIENCES The more senses they use the better they will learn… Mr. Christopher McCauley, M.Ed.

Goals: Students are to master CA State Science Standards LIFE SCIENCE Cells Genetics Light Structures & Functions Reproduction Evolution Earth’s History Mandated Health Standards HEALTH Nutrition & Physical Activity Injury Prevention & Safety Drugs, Alcohol & Tobacco Personal & Community Health Mental, Emotional & Social Health Growth, Development & Sexual Health Scientific Skills Standards Use of science/laboratory tools Use of technology Researching Investigation & Experimentation Construction of Scale Models Master Writing Reports Practice Oral Presentations

Objectives: My students are to: Use science inquiry in learning the standards USE STRATEGIES TO HELP THEM WITH COMMON CORE Master Cooperative Learning – learning from each other Master Academic Skills (organizing, brainstorming, judging, compare & contrast, writing reports, oral presentation & others)

Grading Policy Class work  40% of grade All class works are inside the SIN (Science Interactive Notebook) Home work  20% of grade The standing homework is to finish assigned pages in the SIN/notebook. Culminating Tasks  20% of grade This category is divided into: a) Test b) Projects Participation  20% of grade Points will be coming from group works and class recitation/participation

Holds everything we do in class except projects HW each day is to be sure that class work is in the ISN and completed. Will be graded every 4/5 weeks. Please ask your child to show you the ISN at least once a week. ISN ( Interactive Science Notebook)

SPECIAL HOMEWORK Occasionally, students will be given specific HW It will be Due the next day. This is only given as needed in terms of importance. Students are usually given class time to start these HW’s but not always. Extra Credit WORK This is available now and all semester long. Almost ALL extra credit will be posted on our website. Sometimes EC will be assigned in class. EXTRA POINTS Extra Points can be awarded by either doing the extra credit assignments or by good behavior. Students can propose/create their own assignment and if approved can submit it for extra points.

Cooperation Grade Adhere to the Knight’s Honor Code & class rules/procedures Every violation of Knight’s Honor code or class rule is an infraction. Reversible by: 1. Writing Vocabulary Definitions ( 10 words = 1 infraction) 2. Use CI Pass ( a pass that I give as a reward in class for model behavior) Infractions will result in a phone call home. E= 0 infractions / S=1-2 infractions/ U=3 or more infractions

Textbooks: Glencoe: Focus on Life Science Glencoe: Teen Health 2 Suggested Materials: SIN, Pen & Pencil, Sharpener, colored pencil, glue sticks, ruler, USB thumb drive

Science Intervention After school science tutoring will be offered for free starting next week. Being referred to science intervention does not mean your child is failing. It does mean I have seen something that is a concern and we can follow up in tutoring so that your child will not fail or get a low grade.

Please help… Please check your child ISN regularly. Each page will give you an update of what we are learning in class. Also remind them to finish the assigned pages for homework. Explain to your child the importance of following the Knight’s Honor Code. Please make them understand that following rules is a big factor in their success in school. Stephen White M.S. KNIGHT’S HONOR CODE: 1. Respect all adults and students. 2. Give your best effort everyday. 3.Keep hands, feet, and objects to self. 4. Keep food and drink outside of classroom. 5. Be prepared and bring all materials to class. 6. Be on your seat before the tardy bell.

Donors needed! Donors needed! Help is always needed and appreciated. I will ensure that we always have the supplies on hand so your students can succeed. However, this often comes with some out of pocket costs that can quickly add up. Any help is appreciated. Here is a list of materials and supplies that we always will need: 1. Thin Colored Markers 2. Colored pencils 3. Thick Colored Markers 4. Kleenex 5. Glue Sticks 6. Other school supplies
