Table Tennis Cynteria Mitchell History Equipment Basics Grips and Strokes Techniques The Table Vocabulary References

History  Game became popular and was reffered to by things such as: Ping pong, Table tennis, Whiff waff, inside tennis, royal game etc.  Evolved along with badminton in the 1880s.  Early version os of the game in 1890 had cloth covered rubber ball, strung racket & wooden fences around the table.  Changes started in the 1900s when celluloid ball was used; changing the name to ping pong because of the sound of the ball

Equipment 1. Table tennis racket 2. Balls 3. Table

Basics  For beginner and intermediate players, you can often beat your opponent just by understanding the basics of table tennis. The majority of recreational players are not aware of the proper grip, basic footwork, or the effect spin has off the paddle. You can turn these weaknesses into strengths. They won’t know how you are beating them, they will just get used to the feeling of defeat!

Grips and Strokes  Grips 1. Pen Hold- 2. Shake hand  Strokes 1. The Drive 2. Forehand/Backhand Drive 3. Forehand Push 4. Backhand Push 5. Block 6. Forehand/ Backhand Smash

Serving Techniques  The ball must be held above the table in order for your opponent and umpire to see it.  The ball must be held in the palm of the hand with 6 fingers stretched and tossed vertically at least 6in.  The ball must be struck only on the way down  The ball must be struck behind the end line

The Table  The playing surface is divided into 2 courts by a vertical net running parallel with the end lines.  For doubles, each court will be divided into 2 eqal half courts by a white center line, 3mm wide parallel with the side lines.  The net is usually 15.2 cm high

Vocabulary  Let- Losing a point or turn.  Rally- a round during the game.  Point- unless the rally is a let, a player shall score a point.  Game- the winner is determined by the player/pair to first score 11 points. If both players have 10 points the winner will be determined by the 1 st team to subsequently gain a lead of 2 points.  Match- the best of any odd number of games
