HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 1 Defining EDR* Work Packages [Engineering Design Report] Ray Larsen SLAC ILC Division for HLRF Team DRAFT April 18, 2007 DRAFT

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 2 EDR Definition EDR definition proposed at Beijing HLRF meeting : EDR to be completed in two more years, i.e. end of FY09. Will include detailed technical and cost plans that are considerably more mature than RDR. Will include a schedule and funding profile consistent with the plans. Will be sufficiently mature to provide a basis for international funding requests, implying –technology down-selects close if not already in hand –industrialization, industrial cost estimates close if not already in hand. Basis of EDR effort will be regional, inter-regional Work Packages

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 3 Implicit EDR Goals Develop management structure for regional, inter-regional WP’s Develop EDR teams for each Area, Technical System Design R&D WP’s to mitigate high risk elements –Technical, cost, schedule risk Explore industrialization over EDR R&D period Improve reliability of cost, schedule estimates Document EDR to capture “Project Ready” status by end FY09

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 4 What Types of Work Packages? Regional, e.g. Americas –Developed to support regional RDR, R&D programs –Leadership generally a major lab –Collaborators from other labs, regions Inter-regional –Larger programs, group involvement & funding from more than one region –Funding by MOU agreement between partners University –Small individual or group efforts –Require R&D element of interest to university goals Industrial –Use industry to build first articles to ILC specifications –Develop industry cost, schedule experience –Develop inter-regional sources for high cost items

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 5 EDR WP Goals Summary 1.Develop overall global R&D goals for each Technical, Area System 2.Define WP’s for each Technical, Area System that include collaborators from multiple regions, institutions 3.Describe WP details to achieve EDR goals by end of FY09 1.Overall Goals for EDR R&D, industrialization 2.WP Development for Tech Systems, Area Systems, regional, inter-regional organization & management 3.Personnel, M&S resources 4.Schedules & Milestones 5.Project Tracking 4.Sum together into integrated EDR plan

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 6 Expanding WP Scope and Effort into All Regions Two basic methods: –1. Add to existing WP’s extra-regional collaborators with home region financial support –2. Create new WPs led by principals from a new region, possibly open to collaborators from other regions as well General Principles: –Work Package assigned to a co-located group easier to manage & control –Management teams needed to direct related inter- regional programs

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 7 HLRF WP’s – Americas HLRF Technical Systems consists of Main Linac, Injectors, Damping Ring RF components: –Modulators and charging supplies, Klystrons, Waveguide distribution, Interlocks & Controls LLRF included in Global Systems also must be integrated into RF systems Three Alternate Conceptual Design R&D projects underway: –Marx Modulator, Sheet Beam Klystron, Integrated circulator-less Waveguide Distribution

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 8 WP Development Plans Modulator & Charger Systems –Production will be build to print or to specification. –Baseline and Alternate designs in development. –Develop detailed WP’s for subassemblies, new circuit, switch device improvements, packaging design for tunnel, cooling design. –Work toward multi-Region prototype construction and evaluation, industrialization, industrial prototypes –Final down-select by EDR time. Conventional Klystron Systems –Assume klystrons purchased to specification. –Considerable work remains to develop industrial models, cost models for high-volume production –Opportunities for modernizing HA versions of auxiliary solenoid & heater power supplies, diagnostic interlocks, protection and controls, interface to HA Control System.

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 9 Sheet beam klystron w/ PM focusing –First prototype still in development, due ~ 1 yr –Industrialization model, cost model for volume production need much more work after first prototype Industrialization, collaboration opportunities: –Industrialization process –Prototype production & testing –Auxiliary systems – power, protection, interlocks –Sustained power test of cryo-modules in full power 10MW klystron substitution

HLRF DRAFT Global Design Effort 10 Waveguide Distribution System –R&D on Alternate designs –Machining, assembly techniques to minimize flanges –Tuning systems –Multi-Regional experimentation with fabrication techniques (build to specification) –Industrialization of process –Design-for-cost and DFM RF Drive amplifier system –HA System design of RF drive systems interfaced with LLRF –Procure industrial prototypes –Develop improved diagnostics & protection HA Controls tools for RF test systems will be useful in other WP’s if produced in a timely fashion.
