Portugal: Leads the Way Portugal led way in exploration. Land of experienced sailors who traveled the seas in search of trade (for centuries) Prince Henry the Navigator understood their dependence on the sea and financed explorations! Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama and his crew were the first Europeans to reach India by sea. Portugal established settlements in Brazil (S. America); Brazil provided gold & sugar to Portugal. Portugal was more interested in trade than in taking over a land and its people.

STRONG Spanish Empire Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, led the way to Spain’s exploration and colonization. Columbus stumbled on the Caribbean Islands when he was trying to find a new route to Asia. After sailing around the world, Magellan and his crew proved that the Earth is round. Spanish explorers conquered the Inca and Aztec empires (what is now Peru & Mexico).

Spain…continued Spanish made a LOT of money from gold and silver found in the Americas; used a lot of it to finance military wars and buy Asian spices, silk, and cloth. Spreading the Catholic religion – also an important part of Spanish colonization. Spain established a few small settlements along the North African coast to protect their trade interests. The Philippine Islands were named for Spain’s King Phillip II.

British Empires England established colonies in the Caribbean Islands and Atlantic coast of North America. In 1600, England chartered the East India Company to trade in the East Indies (India and Southeast Asia); soon established a colonial presence in India (India eventually came under British rule). Australia became more important to Britain after losing the American colonies.

British Empires…continued One of the major reasons England established colonies was for mercantilism. Mercantilism: an economic policy where colonies exist to increase the wealth of the mother country.

France Samuel de Champlain founded the colony of Quebec (Canada) as a trading post in This is when the French settled in North America. Like the Spanish, they wanted to spread their religion to any lands they colonized. France called their territory in central North America…Louisiana!
