Open House Welcome Third Grade Families

Language Arts Our students will: – Recognize basic sight words – Use word analysis skills – Use selected strategies to comprehend narrative & informational text – Write for a variety of purposes – Use appropriate research strategies – Demonstrate appropriate listening strategies

Math Our students will: – Understand place value to 10,000 – Master addition & subtraction facts through 18 – Understand regrouping in addition & subtraction in three digit numbers – Know multiplication facts through 10 & division facts through 5 – Know & tell time to the minute – Read & write the value of money in decimals, dollars, and cents – Demonstrate measurement skills – Perform basic operations using a calculator

Social Studies Our students will: – History: understand historical events & contributions of Michigan through statehood – Geography: understand geographic concepts- location, place, region, human & environmental interaction & movement – Civics: analyze roles of citizens, purpose of local & state government, and core democratic values such as truth & justice – Economics: comprehends economic concepts in Michigan – Current Events: understands current events focusing on Michigan

Science Our students will: – Compare, contrast & draw conclusions about the structures of plants and animals – Classify plants & animals by observable characteristics – Demonstrate gravity, forces & motion in objects – Understand how natural resources can be used responsibly – Identify the forms of energy-heat, electricity, light & sound – Understand the scientific method – Recognize & describe earth materials & surface changes

Technology Our students will: – know proper keyboarding positions and touch-typing techniques – identify search strategies for locating needed information on the internet – identify safety precautions that should be taken while on- line – know how to insert various objects (e.g., photos, graphics, sound, video) into word processing documents, presentations, or web documents – use a variety of technology tools and applications to promote creativity – collaborate with classmates using a variety of technology tools to plan, organize, and create a group project

Homework In third grade, we have WEEKLY homework. Homework packets will come home every Friday (or the last day of the school week). They are due back, completed, the following Friday. This will hopefully allow your family a chance to complete the entire packet & share your work with your family before turning it in. *There is a homework standard on our report card!

Snack This year Mrs. Wilcox’s Class will be participating in a new snack concept. The new idea is titled: APPLES for STUDENTS. Please visit the classroom wiki for more information.
