Washington Healthy Youth Survey: 2014 Findings Washington State Board of Health August 12, 2015 Cathy Wasserman, PhD MPH, State Epidemiologist for Non-Infectious Conditions

Background School-based survey of youth health and behavior Administered in the fall of even years to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 Overseen by cross agency workgroup – DOH, DSHS – DBHR, OSPI, LCB, Commerce Public schools in Washington register for the survey on a voluntary basis Conducted since 2002

Background In 2014, 35,262 students in state sample from 192 schools An additional 188,962 students from 890 non-state sampled schools Survey topics include: tobacco and substance use; dietary behaviors and physical activity; sexual activity, mental health; school climate; injury prevention, related risk and protective factors and demographics.

Survey Forms Currently, 5 different survey forms Forms A and B for students in grades 8, 10 and 12. (Forms are interleaved) Form C for students in grade 6 Forms A Enhanced and B Enhanced include sensitive questions Schools select to administer either A/B or A Enhanced/B Enhanced

Substance Use, th Graders 21% ±2% report alcohol use past 30 days 18% ±2% report marijuana use 8% ±1% report using prescription drug not prescribed 8% ±1% report cigarette use 18% ±2% report e-cigarettes use 68% ±2% of 10 th graders report no substance use

Substance Use Decreases in alcohol, smoking and other drug use in the past 30 days No change marijuana use, but fewer teens consider use risky High use e-cigarettes Driving after alcohol or marijuana use a concern

Nutrition and Physical Activity

Nutrition & Physical Activity 10 th Graders, % ±2% obese 14% ±2% overweight 24% ±2% report 60 min exercise daily 58% ±3% report 3 or more hours screen time on school day 22% ±2% report 5+ fruit and vegetables per day 11% ±1% report drinking 2+ sugar sweetened beverages per day

Nutrition & Physical Activity Rates of obesity and overweight among school age youth has stayed the same More youth report meeting physical activity guidelines No change in fruit and vegetable consumption Soda and sugar sweetened beverages at school have decreased

School Safety & Bullying

School Safety & Bullying 10 th Graders, % ±1% report not feeling safe at school 8% ±1% report missing school because felt unsafe 23% report being bullied in past 30 days 12% ±1% report being cyberbullied in past 30 days 9% ±1% report being bullied because of perceived sexual orientation in past 30 days 12% ±1% report teachers or adults almost never try to stop bullying

Healthy Youth Survey 2016 Revision of the survey for 2016 is already underway Historically, DOH has led revision of Form B, DSHS has led revision of Form A and agencies worked together on Form C Working to better coordinate and streamline the process for stakeholders as we continue.
