Nervous System Review Human bio 11

Parts of the Nervous System

1. Central Nervous System (CNS) O Includes: O Brain O It is the control center O Takes signals from the sense organs O Processes the info O Sends out new signal telling the body what to do. O Spinal cord O A tube of neurons

2. Peripheral Nervous System O Nerves that extend beyond the brain and spinal cord.

3. Autonomic Nervous System O Controls the parts of the body that act without thinking, such as: stomach, intestines, glands…

What is a Nerve? O Nerves are the body’s major cables and contain hundreds of neuron fibers. O The fibers run to every nook and cranny of the body.

What is a Neuron? O The nervous system is made up of cells called neurons. O They have spindly fibers that carry electrical signals. O Some neurons (nerve cells) are several feet long!

Reflexes O When you touch something hot or cold your body sends signals to the brain to tell the body how to react. O Process: O Cells in hand detected heat. O Nerves send message to spinal cord. O Spinal cord decides what to do. O Nerves from spinal cord tell the hand what to do. O Message is to let go of the object.

The Brain O Color is pinkish-brown O Size of 2 fists O Wrinkly surface (folds) O Divided into lobes O Two hemisphere with different abilities and charateristics

1. Medulla O The smallest part of the brain O Thick stalk at the base of the skull O Connects brain to the spinal cord O Controls involuntary movement (Examples??) O Breathing O Digestion O Heartbeat O Sneezing O Blinking

2. Cerebrum O Largest part of the brain O Surface has many folds to pack in more cells O Cerebrum is divided into lobes.

Lobes of the Brain O A. Frontal lobe O Conscious thought O Planning O Free will O B. Parietal lobe O Movement O Sensation O Orientation

…Lobes of the Brain O C. Occipital Lobe O Main job is to process information that comes from your eyes O D. Temporal Lobe O Speech O Language O Sound

…Lobes of the Brain O E. Cerebellum O Helps coordinate your body’s movement and keeps you balanced. O F. Brain Stem O This is located at the base of the brain O Vital for basic life support systems, like heart beat, breathing. O If your brain stem stops doing its job, you are considered brain dead

QUIZ NEXT CLASS!! O Open book (but please study!!) O Topics include: O Nerves O Neuron (label and define parts) O Brain (lobes: label and define) O Central Nervous System CNS O Peripheral Nervous System PNS O Autonomic nervous system O Types of questions: Fill in the blanks, labelling, multiple choice, matching, short answer.

Nervous system web search O Complete the Nervous system web search O This is to be handed in before the end of class!!
