The reasons why developed countries give aid to African countries Politics of Aid 9 What You Will Learn The social, economic and political reasons when deciding if aid should be given

Introduction Politics of Aid 9 There are a number of social, economic and political reasons for giving aid. There are also humanitarian reasons, where a country is so moved by the suffering and horror in another country that aid is sent.

Social Reasons Politics of Aid 9 Developed countries give aid to developing countries because they want to help countries that are poorer than them. Developed countries want to put an end to hunger, disease, illiteracy and low life- expectancy in the developing countries of Africa.

Economic Reasons Politics of Aid 9 Developed countries such as the UK will help developing countries and “encourage” them to trade with UK companies. “Encouraging” developing countries to buy from UK companies keeps our workers employed.

Political Reasons Politics of Aid 9 Developed countries like the USA often give aid to a developing country because they approve of the system of government. The UK often gives aid to a country because they approve of the style of government. It is unlikely that the UK government would help a country that tortures its people.
