Over the whole course of your high school career.  Colleges look at community service  Scholarships look at community service During each individual school year.  At the end of each year, you could earn an award based on the hours that your have served.  Keep track using one of the STARS forms

IF YOU THINK YOU WILL WANT TO JOIN NHS… NHS stands for National Honor Society and looks really good for college applications. It also provides students with fundamental skills revolving around leadership. One piece of info that is left out until sign up is you must have a certain amount of community service hours to join NHS so it looks good to take care of those early. The hours themselves, as mentioned earlier, are something colleges take a look at.
