THE OUTSIDERS S.E. HINTON 1967 Young adult fiction Jaina G. P.3

Setting It was taken place in a dark city in 1965 with the north side which was the greasers and the south parts which were the socs there was always gangs, fights, and robberies. People like to beat up people just for the fun of it.

Characters Character Physical Characteristics Adjectives of Personality Text Evidence /Explanation of Adjectives Ponyboy 1 light brown hair 1 very caring 1pg 154 “please, not him … not him” 2 green eyes 2 anxious 2 “ you in love with sandy? Whats it like? Pg 18 3 long hair 3 smart 3 gets good grades in school sodapop 1 movie star handsome 1 good looking 1 he has dark gold hair and hid dad’s eyes 2 sensitive face 2 emotional 2 page 7 reckless and thoughtful/ 3 middle sized 3 tough 3 he is smaller than darry but tough pg 7

Conflict I think the conflict is whenever johny killed bob because everything revolves around that night like when the church fire or johny dyeing. That was the most scary part it makes you want to read on.

Summary of Plot The movie is about a town split between the rich South Zone gang called 'The Socials' and the poor North Zone gang called 'The Greasers'. Dallas , Ponyboy and Johnny from 'The Greasers' are friends with the rich girl Cherry Valance and Marcia at a drive-in. Later that night, a group of 'The Socs' chase and beat up Johnny and attempt to drown Ponyboy in a fountain. Seeing that, Johnny stabs one Soc and kills him, saving Ponyboy. The desperate boys look for Dallas who finds a hideout for them in a nearby town. One week later, Johnny and Ponyboy decide to return to their hometown, with Dallas, to claim the murder as self-defense. But on their way back, they see the church on fire and Ponyboy and Johnny help the children trapped in the church and become heroes. However Johnny is badly injured and confined to the hospital. Meanwhile The Socs and The Greasers prepare to fight in the rumble.

Theme 1 “Stay gold ponyboy, stay gold”. Pg. 148 2 “He died violent and young and desperate, just like we knew he’d die someday”. Pg. 154 3 “we ain’t gonna cry no more, are we?”pg. 75

Point of View It is in first person because it talks about how only ponyboy is feeling and what his thoughts were it helps me understand exactly what is going to the character’s mind I think it would have been messy is it was a different point of view it would be who was talking and who wasn’t,

Symbolism I think the story symbolizes sunsets because ponyboy frequently talked about sunsets to cherry valance and before the rumble and after Bob’s death he used the idea of sunsets to dissolve the pain.

Recommendation I think everyone should read this book because people in middle school or high school I think they can relate to it with all the bullying and teasing that some kids go through.
