How has technology affected the world and it's people? Monnett Hamilton and Lauren Oberlin

New music and photographic technology accelerated cultural diffusion and expanded global perspective. They allowed people to experience culture and events from other countries and have visible proof of events. Both the invention of film photography and the MP3 connected the people of the world, so they could experience what was happening in other countries. (Picture of an MP3 player and Film Camera) Intro and Joint Thesis

Lauren Intro/Problem Before film photography was invented, people had no visual sense of the past or present events occurring around the globe or even in their own family (1800's Newspaper photo, painted portraits)

Monnett Intro/Problem Music has always been a defining part of the social aspect of culture. It somewhat determines how people behave and communicate within their society. Before the Invention of MP3 files different cultures and eras were sheltered from one another. (Picture of other cultures experiencing music)

Lauren Turning Point/Position In 1888, George Eastman launched the Kodak company with his new invention of rolled film. (Photos of early Kodak cameras, ads)

Monnett Turning Point/Position With the digital music craze rising, one company in particular was formed in 1999 by Shawn Fanning Called Napster. The fear of the continuous decline of the music industry swept the nation. (Music industry photo)

Lauren Arguments Against Some would say that the invention of digital photography was more significant than the invention of film. Digital photos don’t require chemical processing and can be seen immediately and printed. (Digital camera photo/video)

Lauren Rebuttal The emergence of the digital camera was significant, however, the invention of the film camera made a bigger impact on the world and is therefore the ultimate turning point in photography. (Photos of people with early Brownie Box cameras, National Geographic photographers)

Monnett Argument Against Along with those who would say that the invention of digital photography had greater significance, some would say that the invention of phonographic records had a greater impact than the MP3. The Phonograph allowed listeners to hear music at home instead of live at an event. (Phonograph Photo/Spinning Video)

Monnett Rebuttal The MP3 expanded music to any virtual location. On top of that it expanded what music we can hear. Previously it was difficult to get your hands on music that was out of date, but with the MP3 virtually any music from any location could be acquired at the click of a button. (Color photo of the beetles or old band)

Lauren call to action The invention of photography allowed us to travel the world and travel through time, without spending a dime. (Photos of family history, other countries)

Monnett call to action Music allows us to escape reality, reconnect with the past and experience new cultures at the click of a button. (Swapping music files via internet across the world photo)

Conclusion Cultural diffusion and expanded global perspective were accelerated by the invention of film photography and the MP3 file. These inventions both provided an international language so people around the world could connect. (National Geographic clip/textbook) (Cd's Different Languages on them)
