College of Liberal Arts Tenure and Promotion workshop: PROCEDURES AND POLICIES 17 October 2014

Our goals  Procedural Fairness and Consistency at All Levels from point of hire to tenure and promotion  Clear, Focused, Ongoing Evaluation and Feedback via annual review letters  Formal Presentation of Accomplishments in T&P E- dossier whose content is consistent with that emphasized in annual reviews

Calendar of Key Steps  Mandatory Tenure Review in Year 6  Dossier Preparation Generally Begins in Spring of Yr. 5  Departmental Review in Fall of Yr. 6  Department Chair’s Independent Recommendation (letter approximately October 1)  CoLA P&T Committee Review  Minimum of 9 Faculty at Rank of Professor  At least 3 each from Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences  Recommendation by Dean (letter before/after Thanksgiving)  Review and Recommendation by Provost (letter before/after Spring Break)  Final Action by Board of Trustees

Key Steps IN PROGRESS  You’re Hired  You’re Hired  Review Department Operating Paper  Discussions with Chair and Colleagues about departmental expectations for tenure and promotion  Work with a CoLA Mentor  Ongoing Tracking -- Annual Review Process Chairs should discuss progress toward tenure.Chairs should discuss progress toward tenure. Schedule a meeting with the Dean.Schedule a meeting with the Dean.

What counts on Your cv?  Entire record is reviewed.  Work since hire or last promotion is most critical.  Work since hire or last promotion goes on “grid.”  CoLA’s offer letter language:  Scholarly work completed prior to taking this appointment will be considered as part of the tenure and promotion case. Such a prior record may complement but not substitute for a record of academic achievement at SIUC, the latter being essential.  Overall trajectory and pattern of work is critical.

what is Early promotion? what is Early promotion?  Only one try at tenure during probationary period Usually only promotion review is requested in an early request.Usually only promotion review is requested in an early request.  For early promotion to Associate Professor, tenure automatically follows promotion.  Department, College, and Provost want to see evidence of productivity at SIUC.  Discuss pre-SIUC work with Chair, note Dean’s annual review letter, and meet with the Dean.  How early is “Too Early” ?
