VOICE PARTS An Introduction

SOPRANO ALTO WHOLE CHOIR TENOR BASS

SOPRANO The highest female voice part Usually carries the melody Sometimes divided into 2 parts – Soprano 1 and Soprano 2 Originally sung by young, unchanged MALE voices!

ALTO The lower female voice part Usually sings harmony, adding texture and richness to the sound Sometimes divided into 2 parts – Alto 1 and Alto 2 Originally sung by male falsettists

TENOR The highest male voice part Usually sings harmony. Also usually has the “hardest” line to sing! Sometimes divided into 2 parts – Tenor 1 and Tenor 2 Pavarotti was one – ever heard of him?

BASS The lowest male voice part Provides the foundation from which the other three parts are based. Divided into 2 parts – Baritones and Basses (or Bass 1 and Bass 2) Some would say this is the most important voice!
