(We’ll discuss Production later.)

 Using the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, technology is defined as..  1 a : the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area : ENGINEERING 2  b : a capability given by the practical application of knowledge

 2 : a manner of accomplishing a task especially using TECHNICAL processes, methods, or knowledge

 3 : the specialized aspects of a particular field of endeavor — tech·nol·o·gist\-jist\ noun

 a means of effecting or conveying something: as a (1) : a substance regarded as the means of transmission of a force or effect (2) : a surrounding or enveloping substance (3) : the tenuous material (as gas and dust) in space that exists outside large agglomerations of matter (as stars) b plural usually media

 (1) : a channel or system of communication, information, or entertainment — compare MASS MEDIUM  2) : a publication or broadcast that carries advertising

 3) : a mode of artistic expression or communication  4) : something (as a magnetic disk) on which information may be stored

 Judging by our practical application and intended purpose, technology can be defined as the physical tools (computers, cameras, etc..), elements, and methods we will use to complete a specialized task.

 Technology is not just the tools we use to complete the job, it also embodies the production elements we will employ, as well as the methods and techniques such as different camera shots.

 Media is the physical manifestation (a brochure), form (dance) or instrument (water colors) used to express thoughts, emotions, meanings, etc…

 Ever heard of a psychic medium?

 In popular culture, a psychic medium can communicate with the spirits of the deceased. Through this medium they can express themselves to the world.  *note*  Do not try to sidetrack me with conversations about the supernatural.

 In the case of this class, media will always revolve around the expressing and communicating ideas.

 In considering some of the other definitions, the lines that divide media and technology seem to fade.  Technology can be a computer, which is a physical object.  Media could be a DVD or a flash drive, both of which are technological and physical.

 The difference between technology and media is their intentional use. Media’s goal is to always communicate.

 How would you define YouTube?

 YouTube is a user created technology. The videos on YouTube are media

 Since we have defined what media is, what is multimedia?

 Returning to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.  using, involving, or encompassing several media  Example: 1.a exhibit of photographs, films, and music

 It pretty much goes without saying that production is the creation of products.  In the case of this class, the product will be multimedia.  You will make videos  You will make podcasts  You will blog  You will express.

 Essentially, in this class, you will use the tools at your disposal to create multimedia products. Remember, expression is the key.

 My part of this class will be to provide you with the technology (tools techniques, etc…) to express yourself.

 The following article provides a wonderful description of technology and media. I relied heavily on Ms. Puffenberger’s insight in defining these two terms  Puffenberger, Amy.
