Deep Tissue Massage What should you know about it?

What is deep tissue massage? Deep Tissue Massage works by manipulating the muscles’ underlying connective tissue—called fascia—to loosen up areas that have stuck together to form “knots” and increase overall flexibility. Deep Tissue Massage increases circulation to targeted areas, stretches tissue and releases toxins that were trapped in the adhesions. The motions used in a deep tissue massage are similar to those employed in traditional “Swedish” Massage, although they tend to be done against rather than with the muscular grain. The style also employs the use of elbows and forearms.

Does deep tissue massage hurt? Sometimes there can be some discomfort and pain during the massage. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage.

Benefits of deep tissue massage: Unlike Swedish massage, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: Chronic pain Limited mobility Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury) Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome Postural problems Osteoarthritis pain Fibromyalgia Muscle tension

Is deep tissue massage for you? Take time before your massage to talk with your massage therapist about aches and pains that you have. Let them know where you carry your stress and tension. A health history form should be filled out before your first massage and updated annually. This will help determine if deep tissue is appropriate. Communication is key in getting the best session possible to address your needs and get the most out of the session.
