Thinking about the picture before you take it.

Draw 2 imaginary lines (both horizontal and vertical) at equal distances from each other essentially dividing your image into thirds.

Simplify the background and remove items that can take attention away from the subject.

Try to make your subject stand out most commonly, you'll find a lightness/darkness contrast and/or strong color contrasts.
