Where’s Antarctica?  Antarctica is situated over the south pole.

What’s In Antarctica?  There are 2 parts to the Antarctic, the East and the West. It is thought that if you took the ice away from the West part, you would find a lot of smaller islands.  There is at least 2 active volcanos in Antarctica!  Small scale tourism started way back in the 1950’s.  The first ship that was specially made for it was the Linblad Explorer, in  Since then the industry has grown considerably, particularly since the early 1990s, with numbers of tourists increasing from under 9,000 in 1992/93 to over 46,000 in 2007/08.  The reason Antarctica is so cold is because, the sun shines more at the equator, and the Antarctica is at the edge of the sunlight so its not getting so much heat.  The area of Antarctica is 14 million Km.  It’s also called a desert because it doesn’t rain or snow.

What Animals Are There? Polar Bears

What Resources Are There? Two factors make it difficult to study the geology and mineral resources of Antarctica.  One, the cold temperatures and strong winds, along with the 24 hour period of darkness during the Antarctic winter, make it a very difficult place to work and collect geological data.  Two, less than 3% of Antarctica is ice-free, which makes the study of geology of Antarctica very difficult.  So that is why we know so little about Antarctica.

What About The History!?  l l nology.html There has been a lot of Antarctic expeditions over the years and here's a few hyperlinks about those exciting expeditions.

Food Web?  h/4_eating.html h/4_eating.html Plant plankton are eaten by small creatures called krill; krill are eaten by fish; fish are eaten by seals and seals are eaten by whales.
