Problem (1) The PE Changing Rooms at this 1100 place comprehensive school were showing signs of wear and tear and were not welcoming to students or indeed to the local community which uses the adjacent Sports Hall every night of the week. The tiles in the showers were causing maintenance issues as they kept falling off and there was a severe lack of toilet facilities in the male changing rooms. Students had to cut through the toilet area to access the (very narrow) external door.

Problem (2) The need for a specialist disabled changing facility had already been raised and an adjacent disused laundry room being used as an additional storage facility had been identified for refurbishment to provide a shower and changing facility for wheelchair bound students. The corridor to the main changing rooms was narrow and cramped and had to be used by both boys and girls at the same time causing congestion and a potential health and safety risk.

Solution (1) Following the removal of remaining asbestos and the replacement of the flat roof, the area was remodelled to provide a new entrance to the girls’ changing room and thereby ease the congestion in the corridor. The boys’ toilets were relocated into the adjacent external store area and a new exit created.

Solution (2) A new block was constructed to the side of the Sports Hall (accessible from both the main entrance corridor and an outside door) to provide separate storage areas for indoor and outdoor equipment. New shower cubicles, partitions, ceilings and lighting were installed. The disabled facility was completed and the staff changing rooms modernized and tidied.
