The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics How does this relate to evolutionary processes?

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics The 2 nd Law can be stated many ways. It is an oft misunderstood law. It has been misapplied by creationists and evolutionists alike. Let’s look at three ways it is stated and how it applies to the origin of our world…

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics When we think of thermodynamics, we think of heat processes. But it’s much more than that. The 2 nd Law is really a statement about the energy conservation from the 1 st Law. The 1 st Law says: Q = ΔU + W (Q  heat; ΔU  internal energy; W = work done by the system) “Thermal energy naturally flows from hot to cold bodies.” This statement speaks about the direction of thermal energy flow. This does not relate to origins.

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics Another way to state the 2 nd Law is … “Thermal energy cannot be completely converted to work in a cyclic process.” Q = ΔU + W (Q  heat; ΔU  internal energy; W = work done by the system) This statement essentially says that we cannot have perpetual motion. Again, this does not relate to origins.

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics A 3rd way to state the 2 nd Law is… “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” Entropy is energy of disorder. It is essentially unusable energy. IOW… over time randomness increases and things become more disordered. The universe is running down. Remember… disorder indicates unusable energy.

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” ΔS = ΔQ/T o In reversible processes, the entropy (disorder) remains constant. But in irreversible processes (such as natural processes) entropy increases. There are no exceptions. There may be local decreases in entropy, but they are more than offset by an increase in entropy of the surroundings. “In a closed system, the entropy increases.”

2 nd Law of Thermodynamics “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” The 1 st Law (conservation of energy) by itself neither supports nor refutes the theory of evolution. But combine it with the 2 nd law (regarding the change of the form of energy to less and less usable energy)… The initial state – during the inflation period of the Big Bang – the “universe” was extremely compacted and hence ordered. The explosion and subsequent expansion would clearly be an irreversible process. And the universe’s entropy would have had to increase dramatically during this inflation period…

2 nd Law and the Big Bang “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” In order for galaxies, stars and planets to form, a decrease of entropy is required on a tremendous scale. Scientists have never been able to identify any natural ordering process that would tend to gather particles of dust together into these celestial structures. (Such as they can identify what causes snowflakes to form, for example.)

2 nd Law and the Big Bang “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” Such an ordering process could only be accomplished through an intelligent infusion of energy from outside… Evolutionists point out that according to KE, the 2 nd Law is based on probability. Although highly unlikely, they say, a violation of the 2 nd Law is bound to happen… given enough time.

2 nd Law and the Big Bang “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” However, no violation of the 2 nd Law in natural processes has ever been observed. The evolution of our universe requires not one random violation, but almost continuous decreases in entropy over nearly 15 billion years. Evolutionists say that this only applies in a closed system. But we would need to place the entire known universe inside this isolated corner which is violating the 2 nd Law.

2 nd Law and the Big Bang “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” The 2 nd Law states that energy is becoming less available for use… Eventually the universe will reach a uniform extremely low temperature with no usable energy left. This is referred to as the inevitable ”heat death” of the universe. Romans 8 does support the 2 nd law as well.

Why? “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” All we see today is the universe following the 2 nd law of thermodynamics… decaying …running downhill. The violations of the 2 nd law would have had to have taken place repeatedly, against tremendous odds in order to account for this amazing earth on which we live. And even assuming it did, why would “nothing” begin to have matter-antimatter created? What gave the universe such potential? Where did the potential to form positrons-electrons and quarks come from? We always come back to “why?” Why did this happen? “Why not” is simply burying your head in the sand. The Bible tells us “why”…

2 nd Law and God’s Word “Entropy increases in all natural processes.” After the fall, things changed, and not just for man… Romans 8:20-23 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. So the universe is going to be “redeemed” from the downwards decay it has been trapped in since the fall of man.

2 nd Law and Evolution In conclusion, the 2 nd Law is supported by empirical observation in nature. The natural evolution of the physical universe (without God) is mainly unsupported theory. It just gives us more questions to be answered, such as “Why quantum flux?” Why is there such a potential?
