Today’s World The World Today…A Village of 100:

Globalization Is it an economic phenomenon? Is it a political phenomenon? Is it a cultural phenomenon? The process in which trade and culture link together countries around the world seen-today-will-make-you-smile Cultural Diffusion-the spread of culture traits from one region to another.

Personal Scavenger Hunt Directions: You have 60 seconds. Check the labels of all personal items that you can appropriately see. Identify where your personal items were made. Keep a list with each location.

Interdependence A relationship among countries in which they depend on one another for resources, goods, and services –Occurs because countries vary in the types of goods and services they need and can provide –“A Homemade Culture”

Developed and Developing Nations Developed Countries –20 % of the world –Industrialized –Strong economies –High standard of living –Available health care, education, and technology Developing Countries –Less productive economies –Lower standard of living –Lack of adequate education and health care Why? –Instability in political and social affairs –War, Violence –Extreme weather

Data of Developing World 6 billion people in the world ¾ of this number live in the developing world Nearly 2/3 of developing countries lack adequate sanitation (this being even a pit in the ground that can be covered)

There are 960 million illiterate adults in the world, 2/3 of them are women. The three richest people in the world have assets that together exceed the combined gross domestic product of the 48 least-developed nations. 1/3 of people in the developing world do not have access to clean water.

An average American's environmental impact is 30 to 50 times that of the average citizen of a developing country such as India. More than 840 million people in the world are malnourished—799 million of them are from the developing world. The number of children out of school around the world is more than the number of children in school in the U.S.

More than 113 million children in the developing world are without access to basic education. 40 million people are living with AIDS- 90 percent of them in developing countries. Of the 6.2 billion people in today's world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day.

Global Trade Free Trade- is the exchange of goods among nations without trade barriers such as tariffs General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) members in 1995, worked to reduce tariffs and other international trade barriers, replaced by WTO World Trade Organization (WTO) 1995 Nearly 150 members, promotes lower trade barriers Group of Eight (G-8) major industrial democracies, discuss international economic environment and other issues Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) major oil-exporting countries most in Middle East, coordinate oil policies of members European Union (EU) European nations, work for European economic and political integration Major Trade Organizations and Agreements
