An average American's environmental impact is 30 to 50 times that of the average citizen of a developing country such as India. More than 840 million people in the world are malnourished—799 million of them are from the developing world. The number of children out of school around the world is more than the number of children in school in the U.S.

More than 113 million children in the developing world are without access to basic education. 40 million people are living with AIDS- 90 percent of them in developing countries. Of the 6.2 billion people in today's world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day.
