Pest Control How many –cides can you name? –E.g. pesticides What does –cide mean?

Objectives All: know that chemicals can accumulate in a food chain Most: name some of the effects of pest control Some: evaluate the impact on the environment of different methods of pest control

Methods of Pest control What kinds of pest are there? What are the ways of dealing with them? –Introducing natural predators –Herbicide –Pesticide –Natural/artificial deterrent –Genetic engineering –Catch and kill –Selective Breeding –Crop rotation

Peregrine Falcon

Pest Game Why did the falcons nearly become extinct? Some of the class are pests, they carry a pesticide Some of the class are birds which eat the pests 2 class members are eagles which eat the small birds. If you tag someone you get all their chemicals. If you are tagged by someone higher up the food chain you die – go and sit down

Pest Game Results If you get 4 or more doses of chemical it is fatal and you die. This is how the Peregrine Falcon ended up nearly wiped out across the world.

Pest Control Problems What is the solution? Go back to our list of pest control methods, how does each one affect the environment What do you think is the best way of controlling pests?

Methods of Pest control What kinds of pest are there? What are the ways of dealing with them? –Introducing natural predators –Herbicide –Pesticide –Natural/artificial deterrent –Genetic engineering –Catch and kill –Selective Breeding –Crop rotation The mongoose problem in Hawaii
