FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE LOCATION OF INDUSTRIES IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO

CLOSENESS TO RAW MATERIALS  Some industries are raw materials dependant because:  many are bulky and expensive to move  it is better to be processed close to the raw material to prevent spoilage  Pulp and paper, nickel and copper off the Canadian Shield  Limestone from the Niagara Escarpment  Coal from Nova Scotia.

LABOUR  All manufacturing requires workers.  A large labour pool (skilled and unskilled) is available in cities.  Remote areas is a problem. Often companies will have to build a town and provide housing and higher pay to make it attractive to move.

SKILLED WORKERS Are trained in colleges or undergo apprenticeships and command higher wages UNSKILLED WORKERS Learn the skills ‘on the job’ and have lower educational requirements and are simpler to perform

Power Supply  Hydro power (Niagara Falls)  Nuclear (Bruce Power, Pickering, Darlington)  Thermal (Lake View, Nanticoke)

TRANSPORTATION  Major highways (401, 407, 403, 24, QEW, 11, 17)  Waterways - Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway  Railways (CN, CP, VIA GO Train)  Airports (Waterloo, Hamilton, Toronto)

WATER SUPPLY  Large quantities in the Great Lakes and in surrounding lakes and rivers  Used for drinking, cooling, cleaning,

CAPITAL  Easy access to investment capital (aka money)  Have you seen Dragon’s Den?  Why am I writing this?

LAND  Flat, fertile land ideal for agriculture  Fishing in the Great Lakes another source of food

Climate  Warm area of Canada  Climate moderated by G. Lakes
