Lab Safety Contract n One must be kept in binder at all times n One must be signed by student and parent/guardian by September 10th n NO CONTRACT --- NO LAB WORK!
LET’S PREVENT ACCIDENTS LIKE THIS BY FOLLOWING THE SAFETY RULES!
GENERAL GUIDELINES n Be RESPONSIBLE BY: –following all written and verbal instructions –asking if you don’t understand –never working alone –observing good housekeeping practices –not eating, drinking, or chewing gum –knowing location of safety equipment
EYE WASH STATION n At the sink flush eyes/skin with water for 20 minutes in case of chemical spill
FIRE EXITS n Exit out the classroom, down the closest stairs out to the back practice field. Go to where your first period teacher is standing and sign in with him/her.
More General Rules... –Wash hands and clean work area –Do not enter unauthorized areas –Handle live and preserved specimens humanely
CLOTHING GOGGLES WILL BE WORN DURING ALL DESIGNATED LAB ACTIVITIES Proper attire required: close-toed shoes, no baggy clothing, hair pulled back, etc.
HANDLING CHEMICALS –All chemicals in the lab are considered dangerous… DO NOT INDULGE! –Check labels –Use care when transferring materials from one place to another in the room –DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING FROM THE LAB
HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT n To minimize injury: –EXAMINE ALL GLASSWARE BEFORE USE –Grasp the plug not the cord! –Report all damaged equipment to the instructor
HEATING SUBSTANCES Never leave a hot plate on unattended! TURN OFF when not in use! Let things COOL before handling
ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES Report ALL accidents immediately
