G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting - Oct/2005 (1) International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting - Mediterranean Agency for Remote Sensing and Environmental Control - 3-6/Oct/2005 Direct Broadcast + Alerts + Fast Delivery Products: From Satellites to End Users Gustavo C. Cabrera

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (2) Some applications, like emergency management, requires that data reach the final user as soon as possible after the satellite pass over the ground station. There are final users interested in different products, over different geographic regions, and each one have different resources and infrastructure. Then, it is necessary to process the down linked data in near real time to produce outputs according the needs and expectations of the final users, and to deliver the products quickly. In order to provide to the end users the appropriate information with minimum delay, we have indicated some particular situations to the production software, related to the requirements of some projects. If some of these particular situations are observed, s and/or messages to cellular phones are generated and sent automatically to the registered final users for that type of event, and the specific products are generated and saved in a FTP server. This type of system is being used in different applications and with data from several satellites. Some results will be shown. Abstract

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (3) Córdoba Ground Station started operations in 1997 with the reception of satellite data from Landsat 5, ERS 1/2 and SPOT Today the Station acquires data from more than 15 satellites and delivers an average of 1000 high level products per month. Córdoba Ground Station. (ETC – CETT ) From: M. Colazo – June 2005

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (4) What are we acquiring today? LANDSAT 5 & 7 (TM, ETM+) ERS 2 RADARSAT SAC-C (MMRS, HRTC, PIMH, HSTC) EROS A1 EOS (TERRA, AQUA) (MODIS, AIRS) NOAA POES (15, 16, 17, 18) (AVHRR – ATOVS) SEASTAR (SEAWIFS) Archive SPOT 1 & 2 ERS 1 From: M. Colazo – June 2005

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (5) Ant. 13 Ant. 7.3 Main Antennas From: M. Colazo – June 2005

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (6) SAC-C Mission Control Center and Data Adquisition and Processing Area From: M. Colazo – June 2005

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (7) Facilities (related to DB) Antennas: 2 DATRON X/S band, 2 Quorum L and Ingestion: MEOS (X band), MEOS POLAR, Vexcel, CONAE Processing: MEOS (used up to L0), IMAPP, SEADAS, CONAE

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (8) DB brings the satellites “closer” to the Ground Station Software packages allow near real time data processing But in many cases the End Users are still very far from the data

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (9) The System Satellite Ground Station Data Processing End Users PEOPLE ENVIRONMENT GS Footprint

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (10) The Systems End Users PEOPLE ENVIRONMENT Frequently this interface is the problem

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (11) In other words…. What can a fireman do (as a end user of satellite data) in benefice of the rural inhabitants and of the environment of a remote area, with a multi-megabyte, complex format product, with some days of delay, after the fire ends?

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (12) The problem is to provide useful products to end users, This is: Near real time Easy to use Specific data Customization of contents, format, and delivery methods for each kind of product

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (13) Example: Hot Spots Satellite Pass Acquisition MODIS – AVHRR – HSTC (SAC-C) There are redundant Antennas, RF equipment and ingestion systems Specific systems for each satellite, backup systems. Sat?=SAC and Night Process to L1B Use MODIS CloudMask Process Hot Spots Synergy Specific software for each sensor

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (14) Example: Hot Spots (cont.) PNMF(Office) SMS PNMF(Field) All detected Hot Spots Detected Hot Spots in each area Publish in WEB QL and Hot Spots list Subsets L1B Comp. with volcano list / SMS VAAC Detected Hot Spots coincident with volcanoes Of all Hot Spots areas Put HR SS in ftp site For specific end users Prod. Order of related products Specific products for each case

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (15) FOCOS Fila, Columna, Latitud, Longitud 1088, 527, , , 111, , , 143, , , 142, , , 143, , COINCIDENTES CON VOLCANES 2771, 250, , DETECTION LIST ( S) DATA & RELATED PRODUCTS (web-ftp)

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (16) Comments: In the summer 2004/2005 in Patagonia this system was effective in early detection of fires in remote areas. Fires were detected by this system earlier than others. The last 2 events of Villarica Volcano were detected and informed earlier than other systems Gas Flares are used as tests for volcanic alerts

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (17) Products for the National Weather Service (SMN) All AQUA an Terra passes Atmosphere products are generated with IMAPP SMN users and analysts are ed in RT Products are passed in the format specified by SMN to the SMN intranet SMN and CONAE are collaborating in the improvement of this scheme

G. Cabrera - International EOS/NPP Direct Readout Meeting – Oct/2005 (18) But.... There are some cases in that the end users are really near to the DB systems…..
