September 8, 2011 Without using any resources( books or others) write as many states as you can on the map of the USA.

Objectives: ► use a coordinate system to find locations Agenda ► Map Activity ► Latitude and Longitude notes ► Lab #6: Latitude and Longitude ► Topographic Notes ► Gradient worksheet

Accuracy in location ► For more accuracy in location, degrees can be divided into smaller parts. ► One degree can be divided into 60 minutes(')

Polaris ► Is always above the north pole ► It is a celestial object ( outside of earth’s atmosphere)

► Latitude is equal to the angle of Polaris in the Northern Hemisphere

What is the latitude of the observer?

Hemispheres ► By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

Time Zones ► The Earth is divided into 24 time zones, corresponding to 24 hours in a day. ► Each 15° is one hour difference in time. ► As you move west the time is one hour less ► Places that have the same longitude will be in the same time zone.

Latitude and Longitude Resources ► Latitude and Longitude Quiz Latitude and Longitude Quiz Latitude and Longitude Quiz

Gradient ► The change in elevation from one point to another is the slope of the terrain. This is a measure of how steep the slope is. ► Gradient = Rise = Change in elevation Run distance Run distance

Ticket out the door ► Complete gradient worksheet.
