Lecture 1 – What is Analytical Chemistry? & What is the Analytical Method?

Time out…let’s define some terms and concepts that will be very important when discussing instrumentation: Sensitivity Selectivity Detection Limit Dynamic Range

Selecting an Analytical/Instrumental “Technique” – Things to Consider….. 1.What accuracy is required? Defines how much time and effort you’ll need for analysis 2.How much sample is available? 3.What is the concentration range of the analyte? {2 and 3 determine how ‘sensitive’ the method must be and how wide a range of concentrations must be} 4.What components of the sample cause interference? Determines “selectivity” required 5.What are the physical and chemical properties of the sample matrix? Some (most!) methods are phase (s,l, or g) specific 6.How many samples are to be analyzed?

Other things to consider…. -speed -ease and convenience -skill required of operator -cost and availability of equipment -per-sample cost
