CLASS DISCUSSION Which food store do you or your family shop in for groceries (i.e. Stop and Shop, A&P, Hannafords?) Who does the shopping in your family?

If you had the option to choose Cheerios or the store brand for Cheerios, which would you choose? Explain your answer. (ex: Cheerios Vs. Joe’s O’s in Trader Joe’s) Did you ever notice the price label for the item? Can you understand this label?

Which is a better buy? The A & P is selling 5 apples for $3.40. Stop & Shop is selling 8 apples for $4.96. Where would you buy your apples? Why? Which is a better buy? How do you know?

Let’s take a closer look… A & PStop & Shop 3.40 ÷ 5 = $0.68  unit price 4.96 ÷ 8 = $0.62  unit price

Stop & Shop is the better buy because the price is cheaper per apple. Hint…they have a lower unit price. A & P = $0.68 per apple Stop & Shop = $0.62 per apple.
