 The electrons in the outer energy level are called valence electrons What are valence electrons? Practice

How do we know how many valence electrons does an element have? The group number tells us how many valence electrons are in each element.

Atoms of elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbitals/levels of their atoms Exceptions: Transition elements (3-12) Helium (actually has 2 valence electrons) Except for He, it has 2 electrons

Examples of Group Elements with the same # of valence electrons 87 Fr (223) 55 Cs Rb K Na Li H How many electrons do each of these atoms have in their outer orbital/level? What group (family) do these elements belong to?

Highlight the outer energy level Name of element # valence electrons Group # HYDROGEN 1 1 Helium 2 18 Lithium 1 1 Nitrogen 5 15

Now Let’s Try Lewis Structures 1) Find your element on the periodic table. 2) Determine the number of valence electrons. 3) This is how many electrons you will draw.

Lewis Structures Find out which group (column) your element is in. Find out which group (column) your element is in. This will tell you the number of valence electrons your element has. This will tell you the number of valence electrons your element has. You will only draw the valence electrons. You will only draw the valence electrons.

Lewis Structures 1) Write the element symbol. 2) Carbon is in the 4 th group, so it has 4 valence electrons. 3) Starting at the right, draw 4 electrons, or dots, counter- clockwise around the element symbol.

Lewis Structures 1) Check your work. 2) Using your periodic table, check that Carbon is in the 4 th group. 3) You should have 4 total electrons, or dots, drawn in for Carbon.

Lewis Structures On your worksheet, try these elements on your own: a) H b) P c) Ca d) Ar
