Ready for Prime Time – Embedded Systems Industry Focus By LeLand Teschler presented by Manodnya Kanitkar

 Section 1 : Introduction.  Section 2 : Featured Applications.  Section 3 : How to make a Zigbee node  Section 4 : Advantages.  Section 5 : References.  Section 6 : Questions?

 The ZigBee Alliance is an association of companies working together to enable reliable, cost-effective, low-power, wirelessly networked, monitoring and control products based on an open global standard.  The goal of the ZigBee Alliance is to provide the consumer with ultimate flexibility, mobility, and ease of use by building wireless intelligence and capabilities into everyday devices.

 ZigBee technology will be embedded in a wide range of products and applications across consumer, commercial, industrial and government markets worldwide. For the first time, companies will have a standards-based wireless platform optimized for the unique needs of remote monitoring and control applications, including simplicity, reliability, low-cost and low-power.

 Focus  Defining the network, security and application software layers.  Providing interoperability and conformance testing specifications.  Promoting the ZigBee brand globally to build market awareness.  Managing the evolution of the technology.

1) Home Heartbeat System

 Developed by Eaton Corp. gives homeowners an awareness of what’s going on inside their house, even if they happened to be thousands of miles away.  Home Heartbeat will debut in this summer.  It will be available in the form of do-it-yourself kit, which includes a base station, home key, and one sensor.

2) Automatic Meter Reading System.

 Developed by NURI Telecom in Korea is expecting to bring this system to U.S. this year.  This system is already working in scores of Korean homes as government sponsored pilot project.

3) Lusora Intelligent Sensory Architecture (Lisa).  Developed by San-Francisco based Lusora Inc.  This is basically a home-monitoring system for senior citizens.

 Includes a light switch with a tiny digital camera (left); pendant (center) worn around the neck; and a movement tags (right), which can let the system generate an alert based either on detected movement or the lack of any movement.

 Some other applications which employ Zigbee schemes are: 1)Home Automation System by Control4 2)Catching Termites. 3)Mechanism for more rapid processing of returned rental cars.

 A Zigbee node consists of as few as two ICs, a power source and few passive components.

1)Makes existing wireless applications more capable. 2)Protocols for Zigbee are optimized for applications that are time critical. It takes about 30 msecs to join a network, and about 15 msecs for a device to access other network nodes. 3)Zigbee I/O points themselves can take on responsibilities of trafficking gears such as hubs and routers.

4) Mesh-networking feature avoids communication problems caused by obstacles that could otherwise block RF signals. 5)These devices consume less power than Bluetooth nodes, because it uses much smaller protocol stack (28kbytes compared to 250kbytes). 6) Zigbee networking supports potentially thousands of devices per network compared to Bluetooth's eight. 7) Controllers running a Zigbee device needs correspondingly less memory and consumes less power.
