Presentation transcript:

II.Deciduous Forests

A. Definition/Climate 1. Forest is which the trees lose their leaves during certain seasons 2. Varying temperatures from 30 to –30 C 3. Regular precipitation of 50 to 300 cm per year 4. About a 6 month growing season a. All processes stop during the rest of the year

B. Organisms 1. Trees like maple, oak, ash, hickory, and birch form uppermost canopy 2. Does not completely block out light so an understory can grow 3. Decomposing leaves enrich the soil as humus 4. Fungi are abundant

5. Animals a. Wide variety of animals exist there b. All but fish are represented

6. Humans a. Have lost 999 hectares of the 1000 that we had in the U.S. (undisturbed) b. Soil make excellent farmland c. Trees are valuable lumber, paper, and fuel d. Replanting does not work 1. Interdependent species leave so have to come back
