Audio Check I am aware that many of you are new to online learning and to using computers, so before we get started… lets conduct a quick audio check. If you can’t hear me, please confirm that the volume on your speakers are on and if you have external speakers confirm that they are plugged in. If you can’t hear me, please try logging out and back in. This often fixes the problem. If this does not work – please call Tech Support at

Introduction This unit will give background on the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The mission of NAEYC is "to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for all children and their families" (Bredekamp & Copple). We'll explore their recommendations for early learning programs. The NAEYC provides information on developmentally appropriate practices, a Code of Ethical Conduct, and best practices in any classroom environment.

Learning Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Describe NAEYC and how it benefits early learning programs Discuss the key principles of developmentally appropriate practices Explain the importance of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

Reading The readings will address NAEYC and Best Practices, in Chapter 3 of our book.

Starting Questions What do you believe are the most important rights of children, parents, and teacher? How do you believe teachers of young children should conduct themselves with other teachers, with young children, and with families? What does ‘professionalism’ mean to you?

On the Discussion Board… As an early childhood care provider, you overhear two staff members at your facility talking in the hall about one of the mothers of the students. This family has just moved to the United States and has limited English speaking ability. The staff members complain, "How are we supposed to teach this child to read when they do not even speak English at home?" How would you respond? As you review the NAEYC Ethical Code of Conduct, what core values might address this issue?

How to Answer the DB… Although the question asks your personal opinion, I am also looking for how you would apply the code of ethics to the situation. How I am looking for you to respond: Personal experience from the field, if it applies to you. Knowledge from our unit reading on the NAEYC “Code”, including references and new ideas that you gained from the unit. As always, remember to respond to at least 2 classmates in a meaningful way, that will further the discussion. A great way to continue a discussion thread is to ask open ended questions about the unit reading, and add your own insight.

Overview of NAEYC It: Emphasizes that knowledge of child development is key foundation Supports strong partnerships with families Promotes observation and assessment as integral to quality practice Articulates a code of ethics for ECE practice

Let’s take a look at a NAEYC video We will now take a few minutes to check out the NAEYC. Please open a new browser window, paste in the link, and take a moment to view. We will meet back here in approximately 3 minutes. es

NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct Statement Guidance for handling ambiguous dilemmas (you’re torn between obligations, beliefs) More than one possible solution Parties involved are in conflict Resolution has positive and negative consequences Obligation to all parties involved

Ethics Guide professionals in respectfully and sensitively handling ethical dilemmas and conflicting situations. Ethical dilemmas are complex situations that are not solved by research or law and for which there is more than one course of action, with potentially negative impact on one party.

“The Code” We will now take our last field trip of the night, to view a discussion about “The Code” and its importance in the ECE environment. Please paste the link into a new browser window. We will meet back to discuss in 5 minutes :0) WpL-c Please share your thoughts on what you learned about “The Code”…

Your Thoughts… “The more powerless the client is in relation to the practitioner in any profession, the more imperative the professionals ethics becomes” Lilian Katz “When you back is against the wall, the Code of Ethics will hold up the wall” Nancy Freeman

COE Basic Guidelines Respect worth and dignity of every child Valuing childhood as a unique time Supporting family bonds Fostering healthy development Validating the impact of individual culture

Key Considerations Teachers are in position of power and authority over children. You must maintain: Personal integrity — doing the right thing because it’s right, not because someone is watching Professional ethics and responsibility — holding yourself to a high standard, taking responsibility for your actions

Teachers’ Responsibilities Preserve child’s right to safe, healthy setting Empower each individual child Remain current in field research Ensure access to quality programs for all children Above all else, DO NO HARM

Seminar Questions The mission of NAEYC is "to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for all children and their families" (Bredekamp & Copple). What are your thoughts about this mission statement? How can you make sure that your child care or preschool program follows this mission?
