Carolina Yards and Neighborhoods An Introduction to the Program

What is the Carolina Yards & Neighborhoods Program? Beautification 9 Easy Principles Landscaping with Nature in Mind Preservation of our Water Resources

CY&N Beginnings Adapted from a similar program in Florida Successful landscaping while protecting water quality Pilot program in the Piedmont of North Carolina Autumn fern

What is a “Carolina Yard”? Unique or traditional You can create a Carolina Yard simply by changing the way you take care of your yard.

A Carolina Yard incorporates the following 9 principles: right plant, right place recycle water efficiently mulch protect the waterfront fertilize appropriately manage yard pests reduce stormwater runoff attracting wildlife

Right Plant, Right Place Reduce the need for water, fertilizer, pesticides and pruning by using plants suited to the specific site conditions. Bearberry

Reduce Stormwater Runoff

Definitions Stormwater Runoff - rainwater that flows off of yards, roads and parking lots, and washes back into streams, creeks and other water bodies. This runoff can carry pollutants into our water supply (surface and groundwater).

Attracting Wildlife

Protect the Waterfront

Vegetated Buffers

With a little of your help...

... we can protect North Carolina’s natural resources for generations to come.

Because only with you and the CY&N program can we begin to protect our natural environment...

You don't waste water, fertilizers or pesticides, and North Carolina's lakes, creeks, streams and wildlife are protected for generations to come.

... so that we, and future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty.
